Faith is an Action Word

Faith is an Action Word

(Matthew 9:20–22, Mark 5:25–34, Luke 8:43–48)

The gospels tell a significant story of a woman who had spent 12 years and all her money with physicians trying to get well from her issue of bleeding. Instead of getting better she was getting worse. She was an outcast in her culture according to Jewish religious law because of her issue of blood. According to the law, a woman who had a menstrual period was considered unclean for seven days and anyone who touched her was unclean for that day.  Due to her continual bleeding this woman had to stay away from others and was not allowed into the temple. What a lonely and sad life she must have led for 12 years.

This woman heard the good news about Jesus and His healing power. She determined that she would go where He was and sneak her way through to Jesus and just touch the hem of His garment. She kept saying to herself,  “if I just touch the hem of His garment, I will be made clean/whole.” She didn’t say it once, she kept on saying it to herself. She encouraged herself with her own words and built her faith by speaking those words. She didn’t allow her state of being “unclean” around other people to stop her. She heard that Jesus healed and she believed. She knew that touching the edge of His garment would work and that Jesus’ healing power would make her clean again. She didn’t wait for Jesus, she took action, despite the challenges before her.

When the woman made her way through the crowd of people thronging Jesus, she reached out and touched the hem of His garment. Right away she felt healing in her body. Not only did she know, Jesus stopped and said, “who touched me?” The disciples said everyone is touching you, look at the crowds of people. Jesus said that He felt power going out of Him. The woman, knowing what Jesus meant, came trembling before Him and fell at His feet and said that she had touched Him and was healed. Jesus, said “Daughter, your faith has healed you, go in peace.”

What is interesting, is that there were crowds of people surrounding Jesus, who probably needed healing, but this woman was the only one that could extract the healing power without Jesus even knowing beforehand. She heard, she believed, she spoke words of belief for what she wanted, not only once, but continually, and took action. Sometimes in desperation or when nothing else is left, we finally do what God wants us to do. That is to believe in His Son Jesus, the promises in His Word, and through faith with our own words, take action. What do you need in your life today? Write down your needs and find the promises in the Bible for your situation and write your statement of faith and pray it everyday believing that you receive from Him in Jesus name.  (James 4:2-3; 2 Corinthians 1:20)
