Unusual Healings: Mark 7:31-37

Jesus’s ministry began when He was 30 years old after He was baptized and went into the wilderness to fast for 40 days and 40 nights. His ministry was 3 ½ years long before He was crucified on the cross, rose from the dead, and was taken up into heaven. During His ministry, He performed miracles, healed people of their illnesses, delivered people from demonic spirits, and raised people from the dead. Sometimes He would heal in strange ways.

As Jesus’s fame spread by word of mouth, multitudes of people would follow Him to hear Him teach and see what He would do. As Jesus was on His way to the Sea of Galilee a group of people begged Him to lay His hands on their friend who was deaf and had a speech impediment. Jesus took the man aside from the multitude of people so He could help him.

Jesus did not lay His hands on him, but He puts His fingers into his ears, spits into His hand, and then touches his tongue with His saliva. The man could not hear but could see with his eyes, feel the fingers in his ears, and taste the saliva on his tongue. What a strange thing to do. Jesus looked up into heaven and said, “Be opened.” Immediately, his ears were opened and his tongue was loosened so that he could speak clearly and plainly without any issues.

Sometimes we try to put God in a box and expect Him to work a certain way on our behalf. Our job is to trust Him and have faith that He hears us when we pray and let Him work on our behalf. God will use His ways in His timing. We can be assured that “all things work together for our good because we love Him and are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28; Isaiah 55:8-9)
