Know Who You Are and Whose You Are: Genesis 1 and 2

The first book in the Bible is the book of Genesis where we have the account of God creating our world, life, and mankind. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” (Gen. 1:1) The Spirit of God moves upon the waters and in the darkness of the earth, He says, “Let there be light,” and there was light. He saw the light and called it good.  God continues to speak into existence his creation and calls the result of each day “good.”

Here is a summary of the seven-day account in Genesis:

Day One: God speaks light into the world, divides the light from darkness.

Day Two: God speaks and creates a firmament or expanse to separate the waters above and below the earth’s atmosphere.

Day Three: God speaks and brings up dry land and keeps the waters separated and calls the land Earth and the water Seas. He speaks and creates herbs, fruit trees, and other plant life that have seeds within them.

Day Four: God speaks and creates the lights in the heavens, stars, sun, moon, and sets them as signs and seasons, days, and years.

Day Five:  God speaks and creates living sea creatures and winged birds. God blesses them and He commands them to “Be fruitful and multiply.”

Day Six:  God speaks and creates the beasts of the earth, cattle and all living creatures that creep on the earth. God says, “Let us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish, birds, cattle, all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” God formed man from the dust of the ground and breathe Into his nostrils the breath of life and man became a living being. He created man in  His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. God said it was not good for man, Adam, to be alone and that He would make him helper comparable to him. God caused Adam to have a deep sleep and while he was asleep he took one of his ribs and closed up his flesh. With the rib, he created woman, Eve, and brought her to Adam. God said that man and his wife would become one flesh. God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, subdue it and have dominion over all living creatures.”

Day Seven: God rests from His work which was completed and sanctifies the day as set apart special and Holy.

When you believe that you are created in God’s image, life has meaning and purpose. God created a beautiful world/earth for mankind that was fully sustainable and would provide an abundance of food and water for life to carry on. God created mankind as male and female and told them to be fruitful and multiply. Although the Genesis account of creation is not a worldview, it is God’s Word and helps us to identify who we are.

If you are made in God’s image, your life has value because He planned for your birth. God is not the author of confusion, so when you are not sure who you are, read Psalm 139:13-18. “You are fearfully and wonderfully made...and God saw your substance, being yet unformed, in the womb of your mother.“ He has plans for your life to give you hope and a future. (Jer. 29:11; Psalm 139:13-18)

Personal Development Tip of the Week:

This week I challenge you to journal down a few “I statements”. Writing statements like this is a way to continue to strengthen your identity which needs to be worked on as we have so many external influences trying to tell us who we are and why we are not enough. See some examples I write below.

“I am a child of the most High God.”

“I am worthy”

“I am loved”

“I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me”

“I am made in the image of God”

“I am enough”

etc...

Prayer for the week:

Dear Heavenly Father, I am praying over this individual's week. I am praying for you to take them from glory to glory, from victory to victory. I pray they remember, they are not a victim of their history, but a master of God’s great destiny over their life. Bless them this week, guide them, and direct them to have a great week in Jesus name amen!
