Mirror, mirror, on the wall…

Be doers of the Word and not hearers only

Mirror, mirror, on the wall… James 1: 22-25

The book of James tells Christians to be doers of the Word and not hearers only. He illustrates his meaning by telling us that a person who only hears is like someone who looks into a mirror and sees him or herself and then leaves and quickly forgets what he or she looks like. In the natural world, we use mirrors to see and examine the areas that our own eyes cannot see directly. The reflection is an exact picture of our outward appearance. When we see dirt on our face, our hair out of place, how an outfit looks on us, we can do something to make improvements. We can clean our face, comb our hair, or change into a better looking outfit. We not only saw our reflection, we did something to improve what we saw.

In similar fashion, the Word of God is like a mirror reflecting back what we spiritually look like and where we need improvement. We can read and hear the Word of God which builds our faith and reveals God’s will for us, but if we do nothing, we are deceiving ourselves. For example, the Word of God can tell us to forgive others and ourselves, but we just hear and don’t do. We continue to have problems because we hold onto grudges and don't trust God to help us where we are weak. The Bible says to ask Him for help but we rely on ourselves to solve our own problems. God says to give and it shall be given to us. Can we give encouragement, a smile, a helping hand? When you are a doer of God’s Word He tells us that we will be blessed.

Take what you have heard from God’s Word and ask the Holy Spirit in you to help you see yourself as you are and ask Him to perfect your shortcomings. When you have received Jesus as your Lord and Savior, He is there to help you grow and mature in your faith, become closer to Him, and have His power in your life to affect positive changes. When you look at the mirror every morning, remember to be a doer of God’s Word and not just a hearer only.

Personal Development Tip of the week:

This week I challenge you to watch the words you speak over your life every day and bring awareness and focus to when you are speaking negatively towards yourself.

Our self-talk is so important and the only way to improve the way we talk to ourselves is to observe ourselves when we speak negatively.

When you do catch yourself speaking negatively, take a step back and reclaim who you are in Christ.

For example, if you say to yourself, “I’m stupid”, observe what you said, then say something like, “I am not stupid, I am wise, so smart, and so capable because I am a child of the most high God and can do all thing through Christ which strengthens me.

Working on this daily will help you overcome negative self-talk and God wants us as Christians to speak victory over our life and not negativity.

Proverbs 21:18 says The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit.
